We are Caryn and Roger Hill, more known for our storm chasing adventures, we have come to realize that we have a need to share our second passion: photography of the southwest. For two decades now, we have lived, breathed and basically adopted Utah, Arizona and New Mexico as our second home-away-from-home from Colorado. Our tour experiences will leave you wanting more!

Cave Tubing Costa Rica

What started out simply as having a desire to expand our storm chasing adventures into the Southwest desert, where we concentrated on photographing the summer monsoons, we soon realized what the entire Southwest had to offer in the way of photography. Our travels have taken us from the southern edge of Arizona and New Mexico to the northern edges of the San Rafael Swell in Utah, and numerous areas in between. In addition to our amazing Desert Thunder lightning photography tours, our Slot Canyon tours feature the slot canyons we feel give you the best light, color, texture and exploration potential, while staying away from the big crowds at other places. We basically have taken the guess work out of your next photography trip. Through our experiences in learning which slot canyon is best to shoot in the morning, noon or the late day light, let us make your photography trip the 'Optic Pleasure” of a lifetime. We will provide daily instruction on how to photograph lightning properly and how to photograph a slot canyon, as well as the other 'side' trips we make during our tours. We give instruction on composition, camera settings, photo processing, and software you will need to process your own prints as well.

So please, join us for a tour where we will take care of you like no other photography tour company can. Our 20+ years of running tours has given us plenty of insight on how our guests need to be treated. You’ll ride in a comfortable, roomy vehicle, where we will make sure you arrive at each area with plenty of time to take photographs in the best lighting situation possible. We’ll then deliver you to our host hotel each night where we have made prior arrangements for your accommodations (Hotel fee included in the tour price!!!). No need to worry about taking care of your own transportation or hotel arrangements like the majority of the other tour companies have you do. We are here to make sure you are well taken care of and your photography vacation sends you home with many good memories and plenty of images to add to your portfolio!

Baker Street. Originally played by Raphael Ravenscroft. Baker Street is in Raphael Ravenscroft’s book but not in D major. So you could get that music and then transpose it (down a whole step) if you want. Or you could play it in the other key. The glissando sounds like a D major scale to me. How to play baker street. Pure Trek Costa Rica is a recognized member of the ICT (The Institute of Costa Rican Tourism) with excellent ratings for its safety standards as well as the high level of adventure. Pure Treck is listed as one of “The Best Adventures” in the Frommers, Fodor's, and Lonely Planet guides to Costa Rica as well as many others.
Traveler's trip begins with a 30-minute 4x4 drive into the tropical rainforest outside the town of La Fortuna, in the shadow of the magestic Arenal Volcano. Then, trek through the forest on magical trails that lead to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in Costa Rica, a place very few people get to experience. Along the way you will have the chance to discover the secrets that lie hidden deep within the canyon along with all the flora and fauna on site.
From the first waterfall you'll will rappel down from the top into the beautiful and pristine canyon below. Pure Trek has 4 rappels, 3 of which are alongside or right in waterfalls, and one dry rock face. Then a short trek out of the canyon on a magical trail, jump back in the 4x4 vehicles and head back to the base camp for a delicious Costa Rican style lunch (for the 7am tour lunch is served after the tour, for the 12pm tour lunch is served before the tour. Both lunches are served at our beautiful base offices).

Pure Trek Canyoning
Pure Trek Canyoning has been in operation since 2001 moving tourists through a “slot” canyon in La Fortuna. From children to adults and people with experience we have become specialists in this type of tour during these last 6 years after doing the first decent in the canyon. There are different techniques used in this sport that we have adapted for tourists that have no experience. We use 2 techniques – rappelling and hiking on trails in the canyon. Canyoning or Canyoneering is not just a rappel from a bridge or a waterfall it is moving though a canyon using various techniques.
Listed below are the details that we have adapted in our canyon to make the sport of Canyoning into a safe exciting tour for anyone.
  • We always send 3 guides, 2 at the top of each rappel and one at the bottom. When we reach 14 passengers we send 6 guides to divide the group into 2 groups to maintain a very high guide to client ratio. One guide at the top is on upper belay using a friction device (guarding the safety rope for the client rappelling) the other guide at the top is in charge of connecting
the client to the main rappel line. The guide at the bottom is on lower belay using a friction device. Both guides at the top and bottom on belay are there to stop the client if needed, the client is in control of the rappel but the guide is there to help if needed.

  • The clients rappel from platforms and are always connected to a safety cable. They are not disconnected from the safety line until they are safely connected to the main rappel rope.

  • We use set anchors similar to cable wraps used in Canopy tours, connected to large trees on each side of the canyon that have very deep roots and are far from the edge of both sides of the canyon, this is due to the fact that in Costa Rica there is so much erosion due to the amount of rain. The cables are the anchors are also there to sustain the rope the client is rappelling from. It also maintains the rope at a 90 degree angle that helps the client rappel as well as the life of the rope.

  • We work with a structural engineer with all our cable set anchors and the building of our platforms. We inspect all the anchors everyday before each tour as well as all our trails.

  • 90 percent of our trails are out of the waterway. We have exit trails at the top and bottom or each rappel.

'Best excursion we did in Arenal. Excellent tour guides who provided plenty of information, fun and thrill. I would recommend this to couples, singles, families, etc. Photographer got great photos too. Food was also awesome! Best tour around.
Did ziplining afterwards and thought it was boring and not exciting at all comparatively.'
